What is Consumer Law?
Consumer law is the area of law focused on consumer protection in relation to the purchase of a product or service. As a whole it is managed in the UK by the Office of Fair Trading, and is designed to protect a consumer buying a service or product against issues such as faulty goods, fraud and mis-selling. It is this part of the legal system that also protects the consumers rights online and ensures that the consumer markets work in a fair and equitable manner.
A consumer law solicitor will be able to advise you on all aspects of:
Consumer Protection, The Sales of Goods Act and Product Liability Law

Consumer Protection Legislation
Consumer rights are protected in various ways by consumer law, including:
The Sales of Goods Act – this establishes the legal statutory rights of consumers when dealing with retailers, including the return of faulty goods and your rights as a consumer in doing so. The Sales of Goods Act states that any item purchased from a retailer should be of “satisfactory” condition and quality.
The Consumer Protection Regulations (Distance Selling) – if you have purchased something via the internet, over the phone, by mail order or television, you are protected by various aspects of The Consumer Protection Regulations. For example, the law says that on certain items you must be allowed at least a seven day “cooling off period” where you can cancel your order for any reason; That you must get clear information about the goods or services before you buy; You must receive written confirmation of this information after you have made your purchase; Costs and delivery must be clear and you are entitled to a refund if items aren’t delivered on the agreed delivery date. In addition, the usual rules that apply to shopping on the high street also apply to distance selling. So items must be:
As Described   Of satisfactory quality   Fit for purpose.
The Consumer Protection Act of 1987 – The Consumer Protection Act is designed to safeguard the consumer from products that do not reach a reasonable level of safety. In short , anyone that sells products or services to consumers from a base in the European Union are obliged to comply with this act by public liability law. Under this act a consumer who is injured by a defective product may have the right to sue for damages, by making a personal injury compensation claim.
The Consumer Credit Act – this area of consumer law is probably the most prominent in the press at the moment with relation to the mis-selling of PPI. This incorporates the area of law that protects your rights if you take out various forms of credit agreement. There is specific information that must be shown in your contract and The Consumer Credit Act also regulates the way in which consumer credit licensees carry out business.
Product Liability Law
In some cases, product liability law can be used to bring compensation claims for
Personal Injury.
The consumer protection Act 1987 sets the standards used in product liability cases and the law states that if a product causes personal injury and the injury was not due to misuse, consumers are legally entitled to make a product liability claim for compensation against a manufacturer or retailer responsible.
Some of the most common injuries caused by defective products include burns caused by malfunctioning hair styling equipment, burns or rashes from ‘toxic sofas’, scaring or injury to skin after use of contaminated beauty products, injuries to hands or fingers caused by poorly designed pram hinges or salmonella from consuming factory produced confectionary.
